The pair were seen to shake hands, smile and exchange words after Mr Murdoch waved to Mr Hunt outside the Aquatics Centre.

Labour MP John Mann called the meeting ‘careless’ and ‘quite inappropriate’.

It comes after Mr Hunt was put under pressure during the Leveson Inquiry for emails detailing contact between his office and a News Corp lobbyist during its aborted BSkyB bid.

‘He should be avoiding Rupert Murdoch like the plague,’ Mr Mann added.
Jim Sheridan, a member of the Commons culture committee which carried out an inquiry into phone-hacking at the News of the World, said it appeared the relationship between Mr Hunt and Mr Murdoch was ‘as close as ever’.

He added: ‘There appears to be no contrition whatsoever for the mistakes.’

Mr Murdoch was at the Aquatics Centre on Friday as a guest of London mayor Boris Johnson, while Mr Hunt is a regular visitor to the Olympic venues as part of his duties.

Mr Hunt’s aide said: ‘They were both at the swimming and bumped into each other, shook hands and said hello. That’s all there was to it. I think they were talking about the swimming.’
