They were told the Metropolitan Police acted within their powers to prevent disruption when Prince William married Kate Middleton in April last year.

High Court judges dismissed applications for judicial review from 20 people among scores arrested or searched before or on the wedding day.

Lord Justice Richards and Mr Justice Openshaw ruled police were not guilty of operating an unlawful policy.

In a judgment running to 270 paragraphs, they dismissed all claims of human rights and statutory violations.

The claimants included protesters arrested at various locations in London, including 15 at a Starbucks in Oxford Street. One man was strip searched at a police station.

The Met argued the arrests were ‘proportionate’ after an earlier direct attack on the Prince of Wales’s car in London.

Human rights activists said the case has major implications for the policing of the Olympics.
