Pc Simon Harwood on trial over Ian Tomlinson death at G20 protests

*A police officer accused of killing newspaper seller Ian Tomlinson during protests against the G20 in central London three years ago is today going on trial.*

Pc Simon Harwood is on trial at Southwark Crown Court over the death of Mr Tomlinson, 47, in April 2009.

Mr Tomlinson, who was homeless, collapsed and died near the Royal Exchange Buildings in the City of London after being struck with a police baton.

CCTV footage and videos taken by police and members of the public showed Mr Tomlinson falling to the ground and staggering away after gesturing towards the police.

He subsequently collapsed and died minutes later.

Father-of-two Pc Harwood, 41, from Carshalton, Surrey, denies manslaughter.

Jury selection is currently taking place in the court, with potential jurors being warned by the judge that the trial will take around five weeks and they will have to read significant amounts of information.
