The Duke of Edinburgh passed the day ‘privately’ after spending five days being treated for a bladder infection and it is thought he spent time with his wife the Queen and other members of the royal family at Windsor Castle.
‘He continues to make a good recovery and he will continue his convalescence at home,’ a Buckingham Palace spokesman said.
Troops are set to fire a 41-gun salute from Hyde Park and a 62-gun salute from the Tower of London to mark the occasion tomorrow.
He is expected to join the Queen on Tuesday for a garden party at Sandringham.
Prince Philip missed out on the final celebrations for the Queen's Diamond Jubilee last weekend - including the special royal concert at Buckingham Palace - after being admitted on bank holiday Monday.
He went down with the illness a day after spending several hours standing in the rain on the royal barge as part of the river pageant on the Thames.
When asked whether he was feeling better as he was discharged, the Duke told reporters on the steps of the hospital: 'I wouldn't be coming out otherwise.'
