In what transport union leaders called ‘a week of hell’, more than 770 people had to be walked through tunnels on Wednesday because of problems on the Jubilee line.
Three people had medical treatment after the train – one of two decorated with bunting to mark the Queen’s diamond jubilee – broke down near St John’s Wood, north-west London.
Ironically, many of those onboard at the time were celebrities from the arts and fashion worlds on their way to be part of a jubilee event at the Royal Academy of Arts.
Nigel Holness, operations director at London Underground, apologised for the disruption caused.
‘Our staff tried to move the train, which stalled at around 5.35pm, using another train to push it from behind,’ he added.
‘This was not successful and we subsequently took the decision to walk passengers off the train. We will be refunding all those passengers affected.’
Meanwhile, Tube travellers experienced further delays yesterday when a signal failure at Embankment led to severe disruption on the Circle and District lines.
One City worker told how it took her three hours to travel from Liverpool Street to Victoria – a journey that usually takes about 20 minutes.
Mike Brown, LU’s managing director, admitted that in the past few days, ‘customers have not had the level of service they are right to expect’.
But the RMT’s Bob Crow said the failings had led to ‘a week of hell’ for travellers.
‘We are paying the price for cuts that have reduced the transport system to total chaos,’ he added.
