*Newly re-elected London Mayor Boris Johnson has joked he won the race to represent the city despite the backing of Conservative leader David Cameron.*
The Tory candidate beat Labour choice Ken Livingstone in the mayoral battle this week, ensuring he will remain in the iconic position during the upcoming Olympic Games.
Boris Johnson has joked that David Cameron's popularity did nothing to help his bid to return as London Mayor (PA)
But he has seemingly mocked prime minister Cameron by claiming he did so despite his help rather than because of it.
'We survived the rain, the BBC, the Budget - and the endorsement of David Cameron,' Johnson told his supporters at a post-election party.
His remark comes on the back of disastrous local council election results for the Conservatives that have piled pressure on Cameron and chancellor George Osborne.
The prime minister is said to be infuriated by the comment, and the odds on Johnson taking over in Downing Street have been shortened.
A key supporter of the mayor told the Mirror: 'There is no love lost between Number 10 and Boris. Unless Cameron shapes up and takes on the Lib Dems, he will face a full-scale revolt.'
In public at least, the two appear to be getting on, with Cameron visiting City Hall to shake Johnson's hand and congratulate him on the victory.
