Following last week's big race, competitors can now start registering to take part in next year's gruelling 26-mile challenge.

Despite over 30,000 places being up for grabs for the charity run, over 70,000 runners are expected to miss out.

Anyone interested in taking part must complete an online application form before places are randomly whittled down via a ballot.

Prospective runners will have to wait until October to find out if they have been selected for the race which will be run on Sunday, April 21, 2013.

Applicants are charged a £35 admin fee to apply which is refunded to those who are not successful.

The charity Children With Cancer giving runners the chance to join its Mr Men and Little Miss team for next year's race.

'About 1,300 dedicated runners joined our team [last year]. That meant that on race day, about every 30th runner taking part in the Virgin London Marathon was running for us,' a spokesman said.

'By joining our Mr Men and Little Miss team in the 2013 Virgin London Marathon, you can make a real difference and help to save young lives.

'If you are interested in joining our team we ask that you please first apply for your own place through the official online ballot.

'If you're unsuccessful when the online ballot results are announced later in the year, then we'd be delighted to consider you for one of our Children With Cancer places.'

While another added: 'Just entered the ballot for the 2013 London Marathon. My knee already hurts.'
