Gerard Pique and Sergio Ramos are the real heroes of Spanish success

*Mark Bright column: Spain are European champions and what a way to win it. They were like a world-class runner on their way to the final, jogging along, just doing enough – and then when they saw the finish line they blew everyone away to confirm victory in emphatic fashion.*

I was among those disappointed with the way they played before Sunday. Their passing was not as sharp, movement not as urgent and not playing a striker did not sit well with me.

However, coach Vicente Del Bosque has been vindicated. His team scored the most goals and even a centre-forward who started just twice – Fernando Torres – has won the Golden Boot.

The real heroes of this Spain side, though, are Gerard Pique and Sergio Ramos.

Torres, Andres Iniesta, Xavi and Cesc Fabregas grab the headlines – but La Roja’s victory was built on solid defence.

With just one goal conceded all tournament, centre-backs Pique and Ramos were outstanding.

Sturridge can learn from Torres

I hope Daniel Sturridge watched this tournament and learned from it because next season could be a big one for the Chelsea striker.

He should now take the opportunity to learn from his club-mate Torres. The Spaniard always chooses the right option – just look at that pass to Juan Mata for Spain’s fourth goal in the final.

Sturridge is too eager to shoot and he must realise it’s not always about goals. England want young players with good technique.

Sturridge has that – he can play a big role in the World Cup qualifiers and for Great Britain in the Olympics after he was named in Stuart Pearce’s squad for London 2012 yesterday.
