Chelsea braced for loss of Branislav Ivanovic as Real Madrid prepare bid

*Chelsea's Champions League hero Branislav Ivanovic has shot to the top of Real Madrid's wanted list ahead of the summer transfer window.*

The Serbian defender, who has helped the Blues reach the final of Europe's premier club competition, has put together a string of consistent performances in the heart of their defence this season, including in the semi-final triumph over Barcelona in the Nou Camp.

That has alerted former Stamford Bridge chief Jose Mourinho, who is now preparing a £15 million bid to bring the star to Spain, the Daily Mail reports.

Mourinho has pencilled in Ivanovic for the right-back position in his new La Liga champions' side, but the player's versatility - he can also play in the centre of defence - makes him an increasingly attractive option.

Although Chelsea are not looking to sell the Serbian, a fee of £15 million would tempt them, as it is considerably higher than the £9.7 million they paid in 2008. They will also be wary of the fact Ivanovic is now 28.

If Madrid are unable to lure the defender from west London, they could turn to Arsenal star Thomas Vermaelen, as he is also known to interest Mourinho.

The Portuguese boss is looking to move Ricardo Carvalho on and is hunting for a defender capable of taking his place in the long term.
