*Big Story Weather from July 13-15:* Friday was not very active on the severe weather front with only a few hail reports in Iowa, Minnesota and out west in Washington. Strong gusts resulted from thunderstorms in places like Oklahoma and Kansas. On Saturday an isolated tornado was reported out on the Atlantic Ocean section of Virginia along with a wind report over 75mph in the Western portion of South Dakota. Sunday brought another day with one tornado starting out as a waterspout and then making a brief transition as it crossed over land on the eastern shores of Maryland. Also this weekend the heavy rain continued along the Gulf Coast, especially in Eastern Texas and Western Louisiana. This weekend also brought a return to the heat in the middle section of the country with temps soaring back over 100 for many locations. Another extreme event that is taking shape is a massive drought that is spreading across half of the United States with the severity starting to take its toll on many crops in the Midwest. This could start to have impacts on our pocket books at the grocery store.

*Big Story Weather Outlook:* The Northeast will enjoy a nice day with temps in the Mid 80’s. Places such as Boston and New York will see sunny to partly cloudy skies. The Mid-Atlantic will also enjoy partly cloudy skies and temps in the Mid 80’s. The Southeast will see a return flow around the Bermuda-Azores high which will lead to higher humidity along with thunderstorms in the afternoon and temps in the Upper 80’s for places such as Atlanta. An area of low pressure moving through the Western Great Lakes will bring scattered thunderstorms to place like Duluth MN and into WI with temps in the Mid 80’s to lower 90’s back west in the Plains. The central part of the United States will remain dry and warm with temps heading into the 90’s along with some isolated 100’s.  The West Coast will enjoy a nice day with temps in the lower to mid 70’s up and down the coast from Seattle to San Diego. High pressure in the Pacific will bring partly cloudy skies to most of Alaska for today.

*Big Story Weather International Outlook:* A weak area of high pressure will begin to move into the Western Korea’s bringing with it partly cloudy skies from the Korea’s eastward into Japan. A weak frontal boundary will extend across Southeast China bringing a few thunderstorms to places like Hong Kong. The monsoonal trough over India will again provide rain to the region of Southeast Asia. There is a slight chance of rain to extend through the Northern part of the Middle East for places like Tehran and into parts of Kabul. High pressure will bring partly cloudy skies to places from London southward into Spain and France. High pressure over Southeast Australia will bring partly cloudy skies to the region along with another area of high pressure slowly moving in from the west will bring partly cloudy skies to the western region of Australia.

*Big Story Weather Oceans:* Emilia continues to track towards the south of Hawaii with winds under 30kts and a pressure near 1005mb. There should be no impact to Hawaii as it continues to die out. Hurricane Fabio continues to turn out in the Pacific just to the southwest of the Baja region. It will also continue to weaken as it begins running into colder waters over the next two days. This morning winds are estimated at 70kts and a pressure of 984mb. The Western Pacific also has a newly formed Tropical Storm Khanun which has winds near 35kts and a pressure of 1000mb. This storm will track northward towards the Korean peninsula. The remainder of the tropics are quiet this morning.

(The following map is courtesy of F-5 data).

*Tropics Watch:* Tropical Storm Khanun will be traveling through waters in the 27-29C range early in its life. However, as it moves rapidly northward the water temps will sharply drop off into the lower 20C range. Because of this Khanun will not get a chance to strengthen too much over the next few days.
